What Is The Xcel Solar Battery Storage Rebate for Denver Homeowners?
Xcel Energy’s Renewable Battery Connect program offers Denver homeowners a solar battery rebate of up to $800 per kW. This rebate helps offset the cost of installing eligible solar storage batteries, while also helping Xcel manage power usage during high-demand periods.
At Elite Roofing & Solar, we’re always on the lookout for new incentive programs that make solar installation more accessible to homeowners. Between the solar tax credit and various rebates from municipalities and utility companies, Colorado homeowners are able to save significant amounts off the cost to purchase and install a new solar array.
What Are The Rebate Amounts?
This program, called Renewable Battery Connect, rewards Xcel Energy customers with a rebate for installing a solar storage battery. The rebate is an upfront incentive that is taken off the cost to purchase eligible battery equipment.
Homeowners can qualify for one of the following incentives:
- Standard Rebate: $500 per kW of storage capacity (up to 50% of the equipment-only cost), or
- Income-Qualified Rebate: $800 per kW of storage capacity (up to 75% of the equipment-only cost)
- Annual Incentive: $100/year for participating in grid events
Note: This rebate only applies to the equipment, not installation.
How Does the Program Work?
To receive the rebate, homeowners allow Xcel Energy to temporarily access and control part of the battery during peak demand periods, known as “control events.”
- Control Events: May occur up to 60 times/year
- Battery Split: Xcel may use up to 60% capacity
- Homeowner Retains: At least 40% capacity always remains for homeowner use
What Is the Goal of the Program?
The goal is to reduce strain on the electrical grid during hot summer days or extreme weather, when energy demand is highest. Instead of adding fossil fuel backup, Xcel taps into your stored solar energy—while still ensuring you have reserve power.
During periods of peak demand, power grids can become stretched thin, potentially leading to brownouts—a reduction in electrical voltage being delivered to homes and businesses in the area. Solar storage batteries can accumulate and store energy during low-demand periods, then provide power back to the energy grid when demand is high, helping to alleviate this issue.
Requirements to Participate in the Program
There are a few requirements Denver residents must meet to participate in the Xcel solar battery storage rebate program.
You must be an Xcel Energy customer and use one of the following battery systems:
Lastly, they must agree to the terms outlined above, enabling Xcel Energy to utilize up to 60% of the battery during control events, which may occur up to 60 times per year.
