Yes—Thanks to the Inflation Reduction Act and IRS guidance IR-2024-292, tax-exempt organizations like churches can receive a direct payment from the IRS, equal to 30% of the total solar installation cost—even if they have no taxable income.
This program, officially called Elective Pay or Direct Pay, makes solar energy more financially accessible for faith-based institutions. Instead of applying a credit against income taxes, churches receive a refund check from the IRS for qualifying solar projects, including solar panels.
Since churches don’t pay income tax, they normally can’t claim tax credits. The Direct Pay provision under the Inflation Reduction Act fixes that.
Instead of a tax write-off, your church will receive an IRS payment that offsets part of your solar roofing investment.
To qualify, your church must register the project in advance with the IRS and obtain a valid registration number.
Your solar system must be fully installed and operational during the applicable tax year to receive payment.
Colorado does not currently offer a state-level solar tax credit for nonprofits.
Some counties and municipalities in Colorado offer additional incentives, like sales tax rebates or energy grants. Our team at Elite Roofing & Solar can help identify and apply for these programs as part of your project planning.
To learn more, visit the IRS official page on Elective Pay, which explains how tax-exempt organizations like churches can claim clean energy tax credits under the Inflation Reduction Act.
Elite Roofing & Solar has helped churches navigate this process and ensure that every solar roofing project meets eligibility requirements while maximizing available financial incentives.
