After the Storm
Note the time and date that the storm hit your property. Immediately after the storm, make sure it is safe to go outdoors. Listen to your local news to ensure the storm threat has passed and make sure you do not see signs of downed trees or powerlines. One you have determined that it is safe to step outside, you will need to survey the damage. Take pictures with a digital camera or cell phone, ensuring that you accurately document the extent of the destruction.
- Hail stones covering your yard
- Several sizes of hail stones next to a tape measure
- Obvious damage to property, including shingles, siding and windows
- Signs of water damage inside your home
Only venture onto your roof if you feel it is safe. You should be able to check for damage and take photos from a ladder, without the need to get onto your roof. If you suspect that your roof has sustained damage, it is best to call a professional for further inspection.
Schedule a Roofing Inspection
Before reaching out to your insurance provider, contact a reputable roofing company in your area and request an inspection. An experienced professional will be able to tell you just how much damage your roof sustained and advise you as to whether you should file an insurance claim.
Make sure you are home during your inspection to ask questions. If the roofing contractor suggests repairs or replacement, they should be able to explain their reasoning and show you physical signs of damage. Do not make any decisions at this time, if you are asked to sign anything, do not! You will need to first contact your insurance company.
Filing Hail Damage Insurance Claims
If you decide that you would like to move forward with filing a hail damage insurance claim, you will need to have information readily available when you contact your carrier.
Be Prepared to Provide
- Homeowner’s insurance policy number
- Date and time of damage
- Size of hail stones
- Pictures & video of damage
Once your hail damage insurance claim has been filed, you will be given a claim number and assigned a claims examiner as well as an adjuster. The adjuster will set an appointment to visit your home and assess the damage. If you would like to work with the roofing contractor you have already contacted, it is a good idea to arrange for the contractor and your adjustor look at the damage together. Once the inspection is complete, your adjustor will complete a report and deliver their findings to your examiner. The examiner will then review the findings and get back to you will the final results of your claim.
